Why this spec?

Frame:
Lightweight, rust-resistant cromoly frame. Your frame is the determining factor as to how a bicycle will ride, and cromoly dampens vibrations and leads to a smoother, more comfortable ride. Stray Cat Bicycles are constructed from 100% 4130 chromoly tubing, unlike some of our competitors who use either high-tensile steel (weaker, heavier material) for the whole frame, or a mix of chromoly and hi-ten (often the main triangle will be chromoly, while the rear triangle will be hi-ten).
Wheels:
Stiff, sturdy, 36 spoke mid-profile rims with high-flange hubs. The high-flange hub combined with the mid-profile rim means that the spokes are shorter, and we put 36 of them on each wheel (many of our competitors only use 32, or substitute cheaper low-flange hubs). Why do we do it? Because spokes are cheap. Wheel truing, or replacing broken spokes, or having to buy a new wheelset is expensive. The extra peace of mind knowing you can depend on your wheels is well worth the minimal added cost or weight. Our hubs are easily serviceable cartridge bearing hubs, and the flanges have been machined for lower weight.
Brakes:
Dual-pivot Tektro road calipers front and rear with 2-finger cyclocross levers. Brakes are the most important safety aspect on your bicycle, which is why we only use dual-pivot road brakes on our bicycles. Some of our competitors use less powerful single-pivot caliper brakes, and others don't include brakes at all (or offer them at an additional cost). The cyclocross brake levers have a split perch, meaning you can remove them without removing the grips.
Chain:
KMC Rust Buster single-speed chain. The KMC RB chain is coated with a combination of zinc and chrome, meaning that it is far more resistant to rust than a normal chain. Traditionally chains require frequent oiling to prevent them from rusting, but it is messy, can get on your clothing, and needs to be reapplied often. So we cut out the majority of the hassle by offering RB chains. **Note** The RB coating can wear off over time, so proper maintenance and service is required.
Crankset:
Cold-forged aluminum with machined aluminum chainring. Many other manufacturers at this level use steel or cast aluminum cranks at this price point, but Stray Cat Bicycles uses only lighter and stiffer cold-forged cranks. All it takes is one ride to feel the difference that a stiff set of cranks make, and it's very hard to go back. When combined with a long-lasting sealed cartridge bearing bottom bracket, you're ready for anything.
Headset:
1 1/8th Threadless. The Threadless headset system is far stiffer and stronger than the lower-cost option, the Threaded headset. As with the rest of the product specification for Stray Cat Bicycles, we've examined every part and gone for the strongest and stiffest options available, and this goes for the headset as well. Our threadless headset/stem is going to be as stiff or stiffer than most other bicycles of this type, regardless of retail cost.
Cockpit (Bar/Stem/Seatpost):
6061 Aluminum. As noted with our headset, our stem is a strong aluminum threadless stem, but is paired with a 4-bolt 31.8mm handlebar clamp as well. The larger diameter clamp (and handlebar) is a stronger, stiffer and lighter interface (as opposed to the 25.4mm “mountain” or 26.0mm “road” alternatives), and also allows for the consumer to switch between different handlebar styles. Want to put on a mountain-bike-style riser bar? They come in 31.8mm. Want to put on a set of old-school drop handlebars? They come in 31.8mm. Same with mustache bars, bullhorn bars, or just about any other type of handlebar you choose to run.
Saddle/Grips:
While saddles are a personal preference (and are often one of the first changes someone will make), we include a high-quality and comfortable saddle. It's one of the "contact points" on a bike along with grips and to a smaller extent pedals, and so you want to ensure that they're as comfortable as you can make them. For our grips we use a dual-density grip with just enough padding to soften out some of the potholes that seem to exist everywhere around here.
